MapUps
What is a MapUp?
A MapUp is an event in which a group of people come together to improve the places they know and love on Google Maps by using Google Map Maker. MapUps can focus on the map of a neighborhood, region, or even for a particular feature such as hiking trails or cycling routes. MapUps can also serve to teach new mappers how to use Google Map Maker, bring together experienced mappers, and everything in between.
Hosting a MapUp is much easier than it might seem! Below is a general guideline to give you a better idea of what might be involved (and is subject to change per each situation).
Venue & Equipment
What equipment is needed for a MapUp?
* Adequate Internet access and seating/workspace is essential!
* Each person should have a place to sit at a table, with a computer - hands-on learning is best!
* A digital projector and screen is ideal for presenting and demoing Map Maker.
Where can I host a MapUp?
* University and school computer labs are ideal (and usually more cost-effective or free).
* MapUps can also be held at cafés, public libraries, at home -- anywhere where there is an Internet connection!
Attendees
* Who do I invite? You can invite people of all experience levels to your MapUp (just be sure the content accommodates each type of attendee).
* For example, if your MapUp is focusing on cycling paths, consider inviting members from cycling clubs. If your MapUp is focused on improving the maps and improving tourism, reach out to your local tourism board.
* We may be able to inform other mappers in your area about your MapUp.
* You can also invite friends, family, neighbors!
* How many people should I invite? MapUps can be for as few as 5 or as many as 50 attendees, though MapUps with fewer attendees may be better suited for a Virtual MapUp. For MapUps with over 30 people, please consider that Internet bandwidth might be affected.
Agenda
* How long should the MapUp be? In-person MapUps should typically be at least a couple of hours since people are physically traveling to these events. If you wish to host a shorter event, consider hosting a Virtual MapUp.
* When is the best time to host a MapUp? Many people work or have school during the week, so consider having the MapUp during the weekend or in the evening during the week (this may depend on what will work best for the attendees).
